Wheelchair Scales: Easily discover what you weigh!
- Did you know that you can weigh yourself accurately, even if you use a wheelchair by the use of a clever invention known as the wheelchair scale?
- A wheelchair scale is built much like a regular scale a person steps onto but has two distinctive differences.
- First, it can be rolled onto while you are sitting in your wheelchair. The scale is built with a small ramp leading up to the weighing platform that can smooth your transition from floor to scale with no akward bump. Also the platform is larger (to accomodate the chair) and more heavy-duty (as many electric wheelchairs are fairly heavy).
- Second, the read-out displaying the user's weight is often times displayed at eye level so that in the event your range of vision is limited, you won't have to crane your neck to see your weight down near the floor. Instead it may be clearly displayed in a place where you can see it comfortably.
- The down side to all this, of course, is that these scales tend to be a bit more expensive. Well... a lot more expensive than the normal $30 scale you can step onto.
- Many such weighing devices are purchased by doctor's offices and clincs and used in a professional setting, as the cost can be prohibitive for at home users... in the range of $1000 - $2000.
- However, there are more economical models to consider.
- The least expensive I've seen features two narrow weighing platforms each designed to support one half of your wheelchair. If you roll onto it carefully, making sure your tires line up correctly with the little "weighing ramps" you can find your weight for just $550. This scale has a huge 660 pound capacity and can do other neat tricks like calculating your Body Mass Index and converting your weight to Metric Units.
